At some point, I assumed that most acts of a politician are corrupt or criminal. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Hence, I have blacklisted these arrogant masters posing as public servants. </span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">No, it was not the result of brainwashing after having been schooled by workshops and RTDs conducted by the Ateneo School of Government. My seemingly maniacal pursuit for “good governance” or “clean government” is evidently rooted from my actual experience as an “insider”. I came out vowing never to be part of it again, opting to be a political illiterate who hears nothing, sees nothing, takes no part in political life. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Skepticism about politicians made me denounce politics, and I have been very vigilant to decline outright offers from politicians dropping hints about getting me involve in their campaign strategies. </span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Politics is dirty, true. Politicians are corrupt, true. Money is an essential ingredient in the electoral process, true. Because of these truths, should we be perpetually disillusioned and assume the non-participation stance? Do we realize that the future of our children, of our national economy, of our sovereignty as a nation depend on political decisions? Do we accept the hard fact that politics is something we cannot avoid because our daily life depends on it? That the price of gasoline, bread, grains, flour, depends on it?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">All right, corruption does exist. Generally speaking however, not all politicians are corrupt. I am not saying that today’s politicians are genetically predisposed to virtue in ways their predecessors were not; I’m only saying that we can now count on new breed of politicians who appear to be ethical, responsive,<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>accountable, accessible, hardworking, intelligent, transparent, courageous. </span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Getting into politics is a lonesome pursuit. It is not for the faint-hearted.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Sometimes, one has all the good intentions to serve but in this cynical world, it’s easy to conclude that all a politician intends when elected is to amass wealth via illegal means. We somehow refuse to see the other picture that the life of a politician is a life of public service. Sometimes, it even becomes political servitude resulting to disregard of one’s personal life. </span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Yes, a politician should be responsive to the wishes of his constituents. Yes, he owes these people who have worked hard to elect him. </span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">But voter citizens have the corresponding duty and obligation to be broad-minded, to have the foresight and wisdom to understand that it is ultimately the politician who shall exercise a judgment as best as he sees it fit, even if it would mean disappointing some constituents sometimes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The irony of being indebted to voters makes a politician in conflict with public welfare. A lot of voters these days operate on whims, irrational demands, even bullying. </span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">I salute advocacy groups fighting the good fight against corruption. I join public interest organizations specializing in the promotion of government ethics. I applaud whistle blowers against corrupt government officials. Over the years, this country has battled spineless weaklings who succumbed to corruption in the very bureaucracy they have chosen to serve. </span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">After having voted to impeach a chief magistrate this year, I look ahead at year 2013 for an increased confidence in our government and our politicians, both considered public servants. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Let us blot out the stain of corruption in our political system by giving this new breed of politicians the benefit of doubt. Let us scrutinize this early for politicians who are highly able and responsible to heal this cynical nation. It is a tall order, and an equally awesome duty. But it can be done. Sadly, a lot of us are even more savage when we sell our votes for a few bills. Management Project</span> (MWMP), this $275-million project will support investments of <span class="yshortcuts">Manila Water Company, Inc.</span> and <span class="yshortcuts">Maynilad Water Services, He is also outdoing himself in his 10th solo exhibit of metal sculptures, titled “Doorway to Decision”, which opened on May 20 at Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo City, east of Manila.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">De la Cruz says “Doorway to Decision” is a breakout as he introduces new things—fine steel cables for figures to balance on lighting, muscular men and functional art. The 35-piece collection will also be his biggest not just in number but also in scale.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">De la Cruz developed techniques of melding and shaping lead, copper, brass, iron, nickel and bronze, known only to him. Tansinsin called our attention to the fact that we did not say much about the traditional spots for which Antipolo, Rizal, is known. I was told that people who pilgrimaged to the Lady's Shrine also included Hinulugang Taktak in their itinerary.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Atty. Tansinsin recalled that the last time he visited the then-famous falls, it was in near-disarray. That was, I believe, in the 70s.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Over the years, some things changed for Hinulugang Taktak. </span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The spot has been designated as a National Park by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The Department co-manages the site with the local government of Antipolo, Rizal. It has undergone some improvements over the years. </span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">It may have lost much of its old, rustic feel since much of the "batis" area has already been replaced with clean and modern family swimming pools. There are huts and cabanas around the swimming area, making the place useful both for picnics and dips.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The Falls itself may have lost its old glory. The downward gush of water may no longer be as vibrant as our elders would remember it. And today, both social and traditional media have called attention to the sad state of Hinulugang Taktak.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">I am sure the DENR and the local government of Antipolo, Rizal, have plans in place to improve the condition of this site. But it will take a lot of cooperation from the surrounding communities to ensure that Hinulugang Taktak could regain some of its old allure.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Atty. Tansinsin also invites readers who plan to visit the Cathedral to make sure they go up to the second floor of the Shrine where the Marian image is venerated. The spot houses a museum of the Galleon Trade - that commerce which flourished between the Philippines and Mexico during the country's occupation by Spain.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">It's worth visiting.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The Galleon Trade museum is there because the history of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage is part of the story of that longstanding economic relation between two erstwhile colonies of Spain.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Back to the Falls.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Personally, I have a love affair with Hinulugang Taktak. Not so much for its tourism value, but for what it represents in my life.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The Falls is like many of the beautiful, childhood memories we do not want to let go of. Nor can we let them go. We keep going back to them. We replay the sensations and the emotions that we associate with them - playful moments with dad, mom's affectionate touch, the scent of comfort food cooking in the family kitchen, the laughter of friends and playmates.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">As we ripen in age and maturity, most of those memories are placed in the backburner, or stored in the "archives" file, using today's techie language.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">But, inevitably, the "files" are opened and pinned on the "desktop" so they can be "viewed" as often as our needs dictate.</span></div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> </div><div class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Our elders say one of the challenges of aging is the onset of short-term memory loss. The good news is that the long-term memory is more durable.
