Once upon a time this area was a ravine separated from Quezon City by a deep creek. First barangay when one comes to Marikina from Katipunan Quezon City. Barangka is a Spanish word which means 'ravine' in English and 'bangin' in Filipino.

It was founded by the Society of Jesus also known as the Jesuit Brothers way back in 1630.The total land area is approximately 116.96 hectares, representing 5.44 percent of the total land area of Marikina. It is bounded on the Northwest by Quezon City, in the South by Tanong and J. dela Pena and on the East by the Marikina river.

People from all around Marikina and some areas of Manila came and brought bottled water home. Thus Chorillo became a favorite pilgrimage site.

Through the initiative of Congressman Emiliano dela Paz stones from a mansion known as the Estanza used as a cuartel and built during the Spanish period were put to good use when they  built the Barangka Elementary School.

St.Joseph the Worker is the patron saint, the feast day is celebrated every first of May.There are 70 % Catholics  , 15%  Iglesia ni Cristo  , 5 %  Protestants  and others comprising the last 10%. Dialects spoken are Tagalog  50% , Pangasinan  20% , Masbate  20% and Cebuano  10 %.

FYI: The "ravine" we're referring to is the expression of the West Marikina Valley Fault.
