The city government of Marikina inaugurates on April 16 the Ka-Angkan Family History Center in Brgy. Sta. Elena.

The Ka-Angkan Family History Center aims to collect and ensure the preservation and accessibility of genealogical, biographical, and historical information on Marikina’s clans, and to inform and assist the public in the use of the available resources. The facility is believed to be the first of its kind among local government units.

Ka-Angkan Family History Center continues to put together materials – personal and family papers, photos, and microfilm records – on over 40 clans in Marikina whose histories date back to the 1900s.

The genealogical library is named after the Ka-Angkan Festival, a homegrown festivity initiated by then Mayor Bayani Fernando in 1998. The festival celebrates the value of kinship and the solidarity of Marikina’s multi-clan makeup, as well as the Filipino values that each clan reveres. It is virtually a family reunion of Marikeños from all over the country as well as those based overseas, giving the present generation an opportunity to get to know their ancestors and acquaint themselves with fellow clan members.

Mayor Marides Fernando described the Ka-Angkan Festival as a unique feature of Marikina’s culture.

“It brings into focus not just the importance of acknowledging one’s roots but also the value of bringing honor to one’s lineage by constantly leading upright lives. Strong family ties and good values are the marks of true Marikeños. Progress and good values – one cannot exist without the other. Marikina is indeed blessed to have both,” she explained.

The inauguration of the Ka-Angkan Family History Center coincides with the city’s 379th founding anniversary on April 16.
